Walter Louis Dorn papers, [ca. 1920]-1960.

Papers of Dorn, including correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, notes, notebooks, photographs, and related printed materials. The correspondence files are divided into professional and family letters. The majority of the collection consists of manuscripts, typescripts, notes, and related printed materials for Dorn's lectures and writings on European history from medieval times through the 20th century, including files on historiography, the Renaissance, the Reformation, the 17th century, the 18th century, Frederick the Great, Bismarck, and denazification. This latter topic was a result of Dorn's work as a special adviser on denazification to General Lucius D. Clay, U.S. Military Governor in Germany, 1946-1947. Included are manuscript and typescript drafts, notes, notebooks, and printed materials for his unpublished study of post World War II Germany which he had entitled UNFINISHED PURGE. Also included are family photographs and some related biographical materials.

Lucius DuBignon Clay (1897-1978) was born in Marietta, Georgia, the son of U.S. Senator Alexander Stephen and Sarah (Francis) Clay. After graduating from West Point in 1918, he commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers. From 1937 to 1938, he was chief engineer under General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines.
